On Fifty Shades of Grey

profashional:

Out of curiosity of what the BFD was, I read the entire trilogy.  Each book I hoped would get better than the last.  However, at the end, I was left, to use a word dramatically overused by the author, bewildered.

It wasn’t just the crappy writing.  The ellipses instead of proper sentences.  All of the “jeez!” “holy crap!” and “wow!”  The nonsense with the inner goddess salsa dancing and doing arabesques.  The graphic descriptions of butt plug use.  The brand dropping to show that Christian is OMGWEALTHY.  How annoying Anastasia Steele is as a character.

Yes, all of that sucked, but what really bewildered (and quite frankly, disturbed) me is  that suburban housewives everywhere are losing their collective shit over a relationship that is so obviously mentally, physically and sexually abusive.

There is nothing hot about a guy who uses sex to punish his wife for some minor misdeed.  Constantly threatens to “put her over his knee” when she says something he doesn’t like.  Shows up at her office and demands that she change her name immediately because she’s his property.  Orders her to eat.  Isolates her from her friends.  Flips out when she tells him she’s pregnant, slamming doors and telling her how “fucking stupid” she is (even though he refuses to use condoms because he “doesn’t like them”).  Goes to his old mistress’ house and drinks all night and then turns it around on Ana when she’s mad at him for doing so.  Ana’s constant fear of making him angry.

NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL.  OR SEXY.

Admittedly, I do not know much about a BDSM lifestyle, but I do know a lot about domestic abuse from a previous job.  Christian and Ana’s relationship fits it to a T: his control over her, her thinking she can “fix” him, the cycle of leaving after he does something exceptionally cruel and returning because he apologized and did something sweet.

There is nothing hot and sexy about abuse. There is nothing hot and sexy about Christian Grey.

So why did I continue to read after the first book?

I continued to read because as annoying as Ana is, I was rooting for her to finally stand up for herself and leave for real.  I was hoping that the “inner goddess” that annoyed the shit out of me for 600 pages would actually cause Ana to stand up for herself.  Instead, she continued to be a meek, desperate fool who thought she would “change him.”

Gag.
